QUILTIQUE’S 3rd ANNUAL FOOD DRIVE

Benefiting the Children of Southern Nevada

It is time again for our November food drive as we partner with Three Square to provide some much needed nourishment to the many needy children of Clark County.    For those of you who aren’t familiar with the facts:

* Out of the over 300,000 students in the Clark County School District, 48% receive free and reduced-price meals.  In other words approximately 144,000 school children are hungry. That’s enough children to fill the Thomas & Mack Center about seven times.
* 31,000 children under the age of 18 are served each month by Three Square’s Agency Partners.
* One in eight households in Nevada struggle with hunger

These numbers are staggering but we all can do something to help.  Three Square, a local food bank serving Southern Nevada, has a “BackPack Program” to support the children of Clark County.  Hundreds of children’s backpacks are filled every Friday with nutritious and non-perishable food for the weekend.

Let’s help fill those backpacks and do some good for the children in our community.  During the month of November bring in items from the Wish List below and receive a special discount for your generosity. For each “pack” of items you bring in you will receive a discount off any one bolt fabric cut, book, pattern or quilting notion. (A “pack” consists of a 6 pack of juice boxes for example.)  The maximum discount per donation is 40% per the table below. You may donate three times (on three different days) to receive this discount.  Your discount must be used on an item the same day you donate.  You may, of course, donate more but only three donations will qualify for the discount.

(1) pack = 10% off                   (3) packs = 30% off

(2) packs = 20% off                 (4) packs = 40% off

Quiltique will also donate $1 for every pound of food donated by you.  With every $1 donated, Three Square is able to distribute one meal to someone in need.  Our goal this year is 500 pounds of food to beat previous years; so lets join together to make a child’s day.

Wish List for Backpacks: (Please keep in mind that all items need to be kid-friendly, pop-top items, requiring no refrigeration and/or preparation.)

Entrée Items – *MOST IN NEED

      *BBQ Chicken, 7.5oz., pop-top

      *Pasta Twirls & Beef, 7.5 oz., pop-top

A note from Joanie…

Hello Vegas Stitchers!  I am so delighted to have the opportunity to include you in my workshops offered at Quiltique. Even after 35 years, I still love everything about quilting and it is a privilege to share my skills and innovative ideas through teaching. The classroom has become a very comfortable place for me; and making students feel at ease puts them in the best frame of mind to learn. Please understand that I do know my quilts look intimidating, but trust me when I tell you that free-motion quilting is just one more skill that you can learn to use your machine for and that it is my job to teach you all you need to know to complete the project. I believe that the strongest factor in learning anything new is desire, so bring your best machine and a positive attitude and you may surprise yourself!
Oh, I can hardly wait, - Joanie

Holiday Sew and Stuff Pillowcase Event

Benefiting Southern Nevada’s Homeless

Saturday, December 4th

10 am to 4pm

Part of the 1 Million-Pillowcase Challenge

Make a Pillowcase, Make a Difference

This December, Quiltique will host its third and final Pillowcase Challenge Event in support of the 1 Million-Pillowcase Challenge from “American Patchwork & Quilting” magazine.  This is a yearlong challenge to create and donate one million pillowcases to local charities across the country.  We have provided comfort for kids with cancer, encouragement for battered women and children and now it is time to bring hope to the homeless.  We will spend a relaxing day, away from the holiday hustle and bustle, to do something good for another person.  It is the holidays, which are hardest for many homeless Americans and we have a chance to give a bit of hope this Christmas.

Starting September 1st, Quiltique will begin taking donations for toothbrushes, toothpaste, brushes or combs, bars of soap, and small bottles of shampoo.  Then, on Saturday, December 4th, we will sew pillowcases (of course) and also “stuff” the pillowcases.  We hope to provide someone with a bit of comfort from both our pillowcases and what is inside them.  Warm soup will be served as we sew and stuff all day.  Fabric donations will be accepted for this event as well as fabric provided by us.  These pillowcase packages will be donated to the Las Vegas Rescue Mission and Shelter of Hope.

We here at Quiltique are so grateful for such a tremendous effort by those of you who have volunteered your time and money to help out this fantastic cause.  Our first event in February was a smash hit.  Sew-per Bowl Saturday yielded 340 pillowcases that were donated to Safe Nest and The Shade Tree Shelter.  Our 2nd event benefiting ConKerr Cancer went even further to provide over 400 pillowcases to children with cancer.  To date, Quiltique has donated over 1,000 pillowcases through your generosity.  We are still collecting pillowcases in the basket at the front of the shop for those pillowcases that you sew at home.  Fill out the card each time you drop them off so that we can recognize you for your generosity. There will be a gift certificate prize at the end of 2010 for the person who donates the most pillowcases.

Make sure to check the special website at http://www.allpeoplequilt.com/millionpillowcases/ where you can print out free pillowcase patterns and watch the pillowcase counter track the progress to the million mark.  They add new pillowcase patterns every quarter so keep checking back.  We hope you will join in the fun and do a good deed for someone less fortunate.  Give us a call to join in our Holiday “Sew & Stuff” Pillowcase event or get sewing at home to make your commitment to this challenge today.  Someone will love you for it!
