2010 Desert Quilters of Nevada Quilt Show “New Beginnings” We are all looking forward to the Desert Quilters of Nevada, 20th Annual Las Vegas Quilt Show entitled “New Beginnings”. It was greatly missed last year as some remodeling to the convention center was planned and it was decided not to have a DQN show in 2009. This year the quilt show will be held March 19th, 20th and 21st 2010 at the Henderson Convention Center. Quilt show entries will be due by February 1st so get quiltin’ if you plan on submitting an entry. Please watch for more details in your inbox as Quiltique will have lots of specials during the show. Just think you can go right from the quilt show to our shop to see more beautiful quilts and to discover lots of quilting goodies. For more information on the quilt show, please visit www.desertquiltersofnevada.org. Embroiderer Extraordinaire Simon Haskins HERE TO DAZZLE YOU IN MARCH! Jenny & Simon Haskins Trunk Show...$20 Lecture/Trunk Show/Demonstration Monday, March 8, 2010 Hands on Class, Advanced Beginner Monday, March 8, 2010 10 am-4:30 pm Be inspired, motivated and excited by the many possibilities of Jenny and Simon’s Techniques Table Runner taught by Simon Haskins. No longer will you see an embroidery design simply as it appears in a book or software – you will explore the creative potential that is now possible with machine embroidery such as: Twin Needle Shadow Work by Machine, easy Antique Cutwork, Sheer Reverse Appliqué, Shadow Appliqué and Multi Layer Appliqué (all in one design). Some of the things that Simon and Jenny always take into consideration in the initial stages of creating embroidery designs are: How will these designs be used and how many different techniques can we use in this one design? Simon will share with you the creative possibilities you have using just one design, combination designs and combined embroidery techniques to create fabulous designs. These designs can be used in quilts, home décor and garments that catch the eye, inspire the soul of any sewing artist and above all create beautiful embroideries. A class kit will be required but the machine embroidery designs will be provided for you. Lunch is INCLUDED. Simon has traveled around the US for the past seven years with Jenny assisting her in teaching and attending the Houston Quilt Market (his quilts were on display along with Jenny’s in 2005 in their special exhibition), the Martha Pullen School of Art Fashion, sewing machine conventions and numerous teaching events at which he was Jenny’s right hand. In the last two years Simon has been invited to teach and attend many sewing machine conventions including Bernina University, Baby Lock Tech, Janome Institute, Viking Convention, Pfaff Convention, SDTA Convention, IQA Quilt Market and many more. Simon had his first quilt “Simon’s Folly” published under the same name as a quilting pattern, which sold out in the US in a matter of months. He has worked on three other original quilts, which he has designed and made for friends. He has also had his first book published “Aquamarine Ambience,” and his second book with Jenny called “Summer Wine.” Simon’s next book with Jenny was published in early 2009 called “Sharman’s Vintage Garden.” He is a gifted young man who has many talents and qualities that assure him of a brilliant future in any area that he should choose. He has much to offer when it comes to the sewing, quilting and the embroidery industry sharing his special flair and talents to all who come in contact with him. Simon was thrilled to have his first child Harvey in September of 2008. HERE IN APRIL! QUILTIQUE’S 2nd ANNUAL
UGLY FABRIC CHALLENGE
It is time again for our Ugly Fabric Challenge! Last year we had over 25 projects submitted, and let me just say there were no “uglies” in the end. It was so much fun being able to see the creative minds and talents of all of you. This year should be no different as you will get to show off your creative talents to everyone again, so get ready for some good, clean, sewin’ fun! Join fellow quilters and sewers in a little friendly competition and win great prizes for your talents. We will find those fabrics that make us cringe, cry, or burst out laughing, and that poor fabric will get its moment in the sun!
Here is how it works: Starting after Valentine’s Day through March 23 (or until all bags are gone), you may stop by the shop to pick up your “Ugly” fabrics. These fabrics are concealed in a brown paper bag except for a small sliver of the feature fabric revealed to you. In this bag is a feature fabric and 4 coordinating fabrics totaling 2 yards. The ost of the bag will be $20 and there will be different bags for you to choose from. For the challenge, you will have to use some of all the fabrics in the bag somewhere in your project. You may add other fabrics but not leave any out. Your project can be a quilt, garment, doll, or whatever you choose. The project however, must be fully finished, quilted, etc. and must be labeled with a piece of your ugly fabric pinned to your project. Projects are due March 29th at 6:00pm. No entries will be accepted after this date. Complete rules will be available here at the shop.
Starting April 1st, the classroom will be filled with all your fantastic entries. They will be judged by you, our customers and prizes will be awarded by viewer’s choice (entrants may not vote). Winners will be announced April 30th. Winners and entrants will receive Quiltique gift cards. The 1st prize winner will receive a $150 gift card, 2nd prize $100 gift card and 3rd prize $50. All entrants will receive a $5 gift card for your enthusiastic participation.
Come join us and be challenged
to turn uglies into beauties!!
We look forward to doing more events like this in the future with all of you.
